in Cordova
A month has passed since the collision of two
vessels- 2GO Travel M.V Saint Thomas Aquinas and Sulpicio Express Siete which resulted
to a vast oil spill off the coast of Cebu Province, yet the local government
and residents in the affected areas still struggling to control and restore the
devastated region.
One of the municipalities
in Cebu Province with a big fishing industry is located in Cordova, but it
turns out that the oil spill has greatly ravaged this source of revenue.
Local residents of Cordova
experienced damage, not just because the mangrove areas were ruined by the oil spill
but on a larger scale, it has a great impact on tourism and livelihood of
fisherfolks.
Armed with helping hands,
the Development Communication 102 class under Professor Jason A. Baguia from
the University of the Philippines Cebu visited the area and the affected the
families as well last September 22.
Oplan Tabang Cordova was
organized by the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines headed by Bro. Joniel
Perfecio in coordination with the Pamati-a Ako- an organization for fishermen
in Cordova.
Relief goods such as
noodles, canned goods, three kilos of rice, were sponsored by the University of
Southern Philippines Foundation. The Dev. Comm 102 class helped in distributing
the relief goods to each affected families.
“It was very insightful
activity knowing that we were able to help even for just distributing the
relief goods and we were also able to understand the real situation of the
affected families” said Quennie Alboro, a second year Mass Communication student.
Other schools which
participated in the activity were Saint Scholastica’s College and the Advance
Institute of Technology.
