Students of the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu successfully carried out the fight for higher state subsidy and the call for the plight of education through the event dubbed UP Cookout 2013.

This year’s Cookout, which was held last August 16 at the UP Cebu grounds carried a space theme to reflect the skyrocketing issues of tuition fee increase in the state universities with the tag line “Abort mission. Launch education”.

The yearly event started as a gathering and a celebration of victory with the ousting of a former dean in 1987.

The intimate gathering that begun as a reminder of student’s solidarity night against the former dean’s plans to abolish the student council grew into a bigger collegiate event that conveyed social issues in its theme.

“We choose the theme education because it is a universal issue that everyone can relate to, from the previous Cookout’s theme it traces itself back to the issue of education,” said Student Council Chairperson Junmarr Denila.

Organized by the Student Council together with the fourth year mass communication students Beauties and the Best, Cookout showcased talents of the students with different segments such as Kantahan “Supernova”, Sayawan “Zero Gravity”, Bandahan “Moon Rock” and Rampahan “Space Walk”.

1,800 students gathered and rocked till dusk to dawn filled with futuristic and out of this world concept of the different segment along with mascots of astronauts and Star War’s storm trooper parading the event.

Special guests fliptop star Loonie and DJ Buddah filled the air with exhilaration as Loonie sang rap songs such as Tao Lang and delivered fliptop messages to the crowd’s anticipation.
