Cebu media celebrates 19th press freedom week

By Mark Salomon

Media practitioners from different stations and publication around Cebu  gathered during the opening of the 19th Cebu Press Freedom Week last September 14.  The week-long celebration will last until September 21.
Personalities from print, radio, television and online channels gathered to bear camaraderie with other media output and address issues in media.
The celebration started  with a “Freedom Walk” from Fuente Osmeña Circle going to Blessed John XXIII Seminary covered court where a mass was celebrated by Fr. Ramon Echica prior to the opening rites of the week-long occasion.
Highlighting the opening was the Dance Star Show. The theme of the show was ‘lip sync and dance’.

Sun Star, with their festive and cultural presentation showcasing the Philippines, retained the title of being the Star of the Show winning Php 20,000. 2nd place Cebu Daily News and 3rd place The Freeman brought with them Php10,000 and Php 7,000 respectively.
According to Peter Romanillos, a correspondent of Cebu Daily News, the Press Freedom Week is  an avenue of discovering the hidden side of media practitioners. “It was great, I stepped out of my comfort zones for the first time and ventured unchartered territories with the pageant and the dancing," Romanillos added.
The week-long celebration will be filled with dialogues, symposiums, forums, and film showings which will review and enhance basic journalistic skills and ethics.
Seminars will also be held throughout the week. "It will somehow assume a refresher course kung unsa gyud ang angay na role sa media, ug kung unsa ang mga angay buhaton(on the ideal role of the media, and what are supposed to be done)”, said King Anthony Perez, TV5 Junior Correspondent.
The Press Freedom pageant was held the night before at the Harolds Hotel, crowning Luis Qubranza III from Sun Star  and Jessa Agua from The Freeman as Mr. and Ms. Press Freedom, respectively.
Cebu Press Freedom Week has been annually celebrated on the third week of September, to fall in with the declaration of Martial Law in 1972.
